English Language Creative Writing Story Building Prompts. Dice Board Activity, Build your Story
A fun English game designed for my KS3 class to help them with their creative writing. The board contains a series of 5 prompts which will allow the learner to build their story: setting, main character, genre, main theme and conflict.
Give the student a dice piece. They will roll the dice piece 5 times moving from left to right of the board.
for example: The first number is a 4 which refers to the setting. Therefore, their story will be set on a train. The next number rolled is a 1, which mean the genre will be gothic / horror.
the learner will then write a short story based on what they rolled on the prompt board. #
E.g: A gothic short story set on a train featuring a teenage boy. The main theme is survival with the conflict in the story being the character vs the supernatural.
English Literature DNA by Dennis Kelly - Character Description & Scenes Revision A3 Mapping Sheet
An A3 PDF resource that I created and used with my mixed ability KS3 English class.
I got the learners to write down each character in the play and asked them to write down the character’s personality traits. They then drew each character (their interpretation of what they thought that character would look like).
Learners were also asked to pick a key quote from the play that best reflected that character’s personality. Following this, they then wrote an overview of each scene. This was in preparation for a practice essay question.

DNA by Dennis Kelly Character Analysis 11 Flash Cards. Task - English Literature KS3 / KS4 GCSE
I created these after the KS3 class read Act 1 of DNA.
On the back of each individual name card, get the learners to do a character analysis:
Personality traits - positive and negative
Words they would use to describe that character
1 key quote from Act 1 that they feel shows the character’s positive / negative character traits ( e.g John Tate: " …if anyone says it I’m going to have to, you know, bite their face." This shows his intimidating and bullying nature).
On the front of each card, the faces are left blank. I got to class to draw the faces of each character as they imagined them to look. This is their own interpretation.
Print the pages double sided and the cards will print out colour coded to each character. I have also attached grey character cards incase you want to print the cards out black and white ( so they are the same shade of grey).
